Running Claude Code in the Cloud from Europe: Codespaces, Ona, Daytona and Dev Boxes

TL;DR. To run Claude Code (or Codex, or OpenCode) on a machine that keeps working after you close the laptop, the hosted options in 2026 are GitHub Codespaces, Ona (formerly Gitpod, now part of OpenAI), Anthropic's own Claude Code cloud sessions, sandbox platforms like Daytona and Fly.io Sprites, and self-hosted Coder. All of them except Coder are run by US companies, and the hourly ones stop or reclaim idle machines. Coding agents changed what a cloud dev environment is for. An IDE user wants a machine that is there while they type and gone when they stop. An agent you hand a task to wants the opposite: a machine that keeps running after you walk away, that you can check from a phone, with a real database to run tests against and a URL to open the result. This post compares the hosted options on those terms, with the prices each vendor publishes.

What changed in 2025–2026

• Gitpod became Ona on 2 September 2025, and the Gitpod Classic pay-as-you-go product was shut down on 15 October 2025 (Ona, sunset). Ona then joined OpenAI; per Ona's own announcement, that closed on 10 August 2026 (Ona). The company behind it is still Gitpod GmbH in Kiel, Germany, but its hosted Core plan runs on AWS and lists US sub-processors.
• Anthropic runs Claude Code in the cloud itself. Cloud sessions come with Pro, Max, Team and eligible Enterprise seats, on a 4 vCPU / 16 GB VM, with “no separate compute charge” (Anthropic docs).

What an agent needs that an IDE user doesn't

• It keeps running. A task that takes forty minutes should not depend on a browser tab or an idle timer.
• You can reach it from anywhere, including a phone, to answer the question it stopped on.
• Real services next to it — Postgres, Redis — so the tests it runs are the tests CI runs.
• A URL for the result, so you can open what it built.
• Access to the platform it deploys to, so it can read logs and ship without you pasting credentials.

The options, side by side

Prices are for roughly a 4 vCPU machine, as each vendor publishes them. Where a monthly figure is shown for an hourly product it is our arithmetic: 176 hours is eight hours a day for 22 working days.

When each one is the right pick

• Codespaces if you live in VS Code and GitHub. Personal accounts get 120 core-hours a month free (180 on Pro) — about 30 hours on a 4-core machine; organisations get no free quota.
• Claude Code cloud sessions if you already pay for Claude and your work is GitHub-hosted task runs. It is Claude only, and nothing extra to buy.
• Coder if you want to self-host dev environments on your own cloud account and have someone to run it.
• Daytona or Sprites if what you need is a sandbox your own software starts through an API, billed by the second.
• Ona if your team is building around OpenAI's tooling.

Where a HostStack dev box fits

• You bring your own Claude, OpenAI or other model subscription.

Hourly or flat: the break-even

If you use a machine a few hours a week, hourly billing wins: a 4-core Codespace for 20 hours is $7.20. If an agent works on it most of the working day, it doesn't: 176 hours of the same Codespace is $63, and an always-on one is $263. The more of the day an agent is running, the more a flat monthly box saves — and the less an idle timer costs you in interrupted work.
